Carter BloodCare announces critical need for local blood donors
Blood center encourages donations this week as summer supply drops
BEDFORD, TEXAS (July 28, 2025) – Carter BloodCare reports the local blood supply has dropped to critical levels, meaning less than one day’s supply of many blood types is on hand.
While all blood types are needed, type O is the most serious. O negative is the universal donor blood type, used to treat any patient, regardless of their individual blood type. O negative is also the only blood type used to treat premature and unborn babies. O positive is used in emergency situations, such as severe trauma or massive bleeding injuries sustained in vehicle accidents.
A critical shortage can cause hospitals to postpone surgeries and medical procedures until the required blood or blood components, such as platelets, are available.
Though it takes only one hour to donate, blood donations typically drop during the summer as student
donors are on break; crucially, 25% of the blood supply is collected through high school blood drives.
Carter BloodCare is offering various donor appreciation gifts to thank those who lend an arm to donate.
