Nov. 30 – Dec. 1 blood drive honors fallen FWPD officer Hank Nava

Public event with Carter BloodCare sets lifesaving goal to help 270 local patients

FORT WORTH, Texas (Nov. 27, 2023) – The 7th Annual Hank Nava End of Watch Blood Drive in Fort Worth honors the memory of a fallen first responder by helping patients in need of lifesaving transfusions. The public is invited to donate from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, and Friday, Dec. 1, at the Fort Worth Police Officers Association, located at 100 N. Forest Park Blvd., Ste. 200 in Fort Worth.

Organizers expect to collect at least 90 units of donated blood at this year’s event. When separated into its trio of components – red blood cells, platelets and plasma – each unit of whole blood can be used to treat three patients, or 270 local lives through the 2023 drive.

Since 2017, the Hank Nava End of Watch Blood Drive has collected 683 units of whole blood. This has supported nearly 2,100 transfusion patients.

The annual blood drive is named in memory of Henry “Hank” Nava Jr., who served with the Fort Worth Police Department for 14 years. Officer Nava died Dec. 1, 2005, after being shot in the line of duty two days earlier. His widow, Teresa Nava-Salazar, and two children host the yearly blood drive to continue his legacy of helping the Fort Worth community.
