January is National Blood Donor Month

Every two seconds in the United States, someone needs blood.  

Transfusions are regularly needed to treat patients facing everything from diseases like cancer and sickle cell anemia, to open heart surgeries and organ transplants. In total, 1 in 7 people entering a hospital depend on a readily available blood supply. 

As essential as blood is, however, only 3% of Americans donate blood, even though 62% of the U.S. population is eligible.

National Blood Donor Month in January raises awareness of the urgent need for more donors, while also celebrating and thanking those who consistently give to save lives. 

Since proclamation of the first National Blood Donor Month in January 1970, much has changed, but the need for lifesaving blood remains constant.

The nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization is one of the largest blood programs in Texas, delivering more than 440,000 blood products annually to meet hospitals’ requirements for their patients. Services include collection, processing, specialized laboratory testing, storage and distribution of blood and blood products.
