Covington High School senior wins new Chevy Spark after donating blood
Carter BloodCare hosts high school pep rally to reveal winner, Classic Chevrolet Fleet and Commercial hands over keys
COVINGTON, Texas (Feb. 16, 2022) – Congratulations to Covington High School senior and blood donor Bryson Blalock, winner of a brand-new Chevy Spark, courtesy of Classic Chevrolet Fleet and Commercial, in Carter BloodCare’s “Spark-ing the Giving Season” car giveaway.
Classic Fleet General Manager Brad Roblyer presented the keys to Bryson at a special pep rally at the Covington High School gymnasium in Covington, Texas at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 16.
All blood donors who gave blood with Carter BloodCare Nov. 22, 2021 through Jan. 7, 2022 were automatically entered in the random drawing. Bryson’s name was selected from more than 37,000 eligible entries. Classic Fleet donated the car as part of the solution for the chronic blood shortage amidst the ongoing pandemic. The auto dealer wanted to help boost donations during one of the most difficult times of the year for the community blood supply – the holiday season. The local blood supply for hospital patients has never returned to pre-pandemic levels, and hovers at a one-day’s supply of inventory.
In addition to celebrating Bryson’s win, today’s pep rally recognized students’ and faculty members’ involvement in giving blood to save lives everyday. As much as 25% of the annual blood collected by Carter BloodCare is donated at high school blood drives. Young blood donors are the future of a safe and sufficient blood supply as the U.S. population ages. The majority of current blood donors are over age 50 and Carter BloodCare urges all eligible blood donors to make an appointment and invite someone to join you when you give blood.
Donors can complete the medical history questionnaire online on the day of donation, before arriving to give blood. Potential blood donors may volunteer at age 16 with parental consent; 17-year-olds can give independently and there is no upper age limit.
