A donor legacy that fits to a tee

North Texan shares the family inspiration to help others

Hurst resident and Carter BloodCare donor Jake Raper recalled, “Growing up, I loved wearing my father’s big T-shirts at night before bed. They were always Carter BloodCare shirts. I never knew why he donated so much, I just know that he did it often.”

His father’s dedication, instilled with Jake from a young age, led to a similar sense of community.

“When I turned 18, I started donating whole blood,” Jake said. “I’ve done it consistently for the past 19 years.”

When he learned that a family member had been diagnosed with cancer, Jake made the easy switch from giving whole blood to donating platelets.

“I learned that platelets are vital in helping cancer patients. I donate whenever I can,” he said. “The staff is always fantastic and it feels good to donate to my fellow Texans.”

Jake continues to build his own collection of Carter BloodCare T-shirts with each donation, honoring the selfless tradition begun by his father and now shared with his children.

“The need for blood is constant, and I know the life I save could be my own.”
