Donating blood in Garland

Throughout 2024, we’re featuring each of our donor centers and what makes them unique. In December, we’re featuring our Garland Donor Center.

The Garland Donor Center is located right off the George Bush Turnpike on North Shiloh Road, near U.S. 75. Because of its prime location just off the highway, the center also serves residents from Plano, Sachse and Wylie.

This center is also the closest Carter BloodCare location to portions of Northeast Dallas. Because the center serves a large donor base, plenty of longtime donors visit regularly. Clerical Assistant Cheryl Willmon has gotten to know several of the longtime donors, who help bring a familial feel to the center.

“We have several very dedicated donors,” Willmon said. “We get to know most of our donors on a personal basis. That makes our center feel more like a family environment rather than a place of business.”

Willmon is serious when she says the staff gets to know each donor. She provided short anecdotes for several of the center’s longtime donors. For example, William C. is “very social and has a great sense of humor.” Dharmini C. is “down to earth and has a positive outlook on everything.” Ben C. is “charming, and always has a compliment for everyone. He knows how to brighten anyone’s day.”

In another donor story Willmon provided, long-time donor Diana S. had a complete Christmas lunch catered for the staff last year as a thank-you and a token of appreciation; Willmon said it was a very nice and thoughtful gesture that the staff really enjoyed. Willmon also mentioned it’s not uncommon for donors to bring donuts, pizza or flowers for the staff to enjoy.

The relationship shared between the staff and donors at the Garland Donor Center has created a strong culture, one that continues to save lives by making transfusion possible.

“The extraordinary people that come through our doors are unique,” Willmon said. “They take time out of their busy schedules to save a life, not just once, but on a regular basis.”
