Donating blood in Waco

Throughout 2024, we’re featuring each of our donor centers and what makes them unique. In October, we’re featuring our Waco Donor Center.

Located right off Highway 84 and near Interstate 35, the Waco Donor Center serves the heart of Central Texas. This center is unique because the building includes the donor center and it also serves as the distribution depot for Central Texas.

The Waco Donor Center is highly successful as the only center serving Central Texas. The center serves Baylor University and 14 area high schools, making customer service an important pillar of success for the staff, according to Site Supervisor Aglaen Guerrero.

“Our staff makes our donor center what it is,” Guerrero said. “Everyone here has their own unique character and make donors feel welcomed and appreciated. Our donors also make us feel appreciated. Some donors will bring us brownies and cookies each time they donate.”

The customer service-oriented culture the staff has fostered at the Waco Donor Center keeps donors coming back. Guerrero mentioned 10 longtime donors by name off the top of her head when asked. She says Malcom M. has a goal to donate more than 100 gallons, while Frank U., John W., Cynthia P. and Paula W. are some of the center’s other longtime platelet and whole blood donors.

According to Guerrero, those who frequent the Waco Donor Center are often motivated to donate in honor of someone they know who has needed blood before. In contrast to metro areas, Waco is a big town with the feel of a small, community-oriented town. Many donors feel a responsibility to take care of their community.

“Waco is a small community that comes together to keep our local hospitals’ inventory of blood in good standing,” Guererro said. “Some people come to donate because a loved one needed blood, and they typically turn into lifelong donors.”
