Nethra’s story: Making a positive mark in the world

Donating blood on a regular basis is an important way to give back to the community. It’s a healthy habit that often begins in high school, as civic-minded juniors and seniors step up to pitch in. They make up a vital pool of much-needed whole blood donors, since high school blood drives account for up to 25% of the community blood supply. Donors may give blood starting at age 16 with parental consent. Those 17 years and older may donate independently.

High school student Nethra Kartheeswaran said she understands that when she and her fellow classmates donate blood, they help those in urgent need of lifesaving transfusions.

These include accident and trauma patients, those undergoing cancer treatments, mothers experiencing blood loss during labor, older adults with health issues, and many others.

As Texas students head back to class this month for the start of the 2022 – 2023 school year, Nethra shares her perspective on the importance of giving to help others:

“I donated blood at the blood drive that my high school was hosting. I always wished to donate blood, but once I was finally 16, I realized that the time had come sooner than I’d expected.

I took my time when deciding upon whether I should commit to something so brave so soon into my life. But then, I realized that it is never too soon to save lives and make a mark in the world.

Yes, donating blood is a way of making a mark on the world. You are capable of saving three lives in just 15 – 20 minutes.

It doesn’t matter what blood type you are. If you are eligible, do it.”
