Donating blood in Tyler
Throughout 2024, we’re featuring each of our donor centers and what makes them unique. In June, we’re featuring our Tyler Donor Center.
The Tyler Donor Center is one of two Carter BloodCare Donor Centers serving East Texas. It is conveniently located on Baxter Street, which is walking distance from Tyler’s hospital district. According to Site Supervisor Allison Tobey, the center is unique compared to other Carter BloodCare locations because of its layout.
“The center is surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows, which donors love,” Tobey said. “Anytime we have new donors or visitors, they praise us for how beautiful our center is.”
Beauty isn’t the only thing that attracts donors to the center, which Tobey describes as the staff’s “pride and joy.” The friendliness of the staff keeps donors coming back. The staff embodies the way of life in their community.
“We have good old East Texas hospitality here,” Tobey said. “Donors say they enjoy coming here because we always know their name and pick up the conversation from their last donation. Each member brings something special to the table, with their skills, hard work and charisma.”
Tobey describes the staff as “fun-loving, dedicated people,” and they certainly are dedicated. Over the years, donor Billy H. donated 75 gallons of blood with the Tyler Donor Center and was 93 years old at the time of his last donation. When he passed in 2022, his celebration of life was dedicated to his lifetime of donating. Tobey and two other staff members attended his celebration of life. His daughter, Lynn, donates at the center as often as she can in remembrance of her father.
Tyler is a community-oriented town, and that is reflected in the staff and the donors. Tobey says the people of Tyler are awesome and that they care deeply about their community. She also has a pair of thank you’s, for the community and for her staff.
“To the husbands and wives, mothers and fathers, colleagues, nurses, physicians, first responders, firefighters, teachers, Saturday platelet crew, goal seekers, lifelong friends and family, and all of our donors – thank you from the Tyler Donor Center,” Tobey said. “Because of you, we make transfusion possible.
“I’m also super proud of our team, and for all their hard work and dedication. Marlen, Sabrina, Mason, Lynda, Joanna, Elizabeth and Vikki; because of this team, we have a successful donor center.”
