Blood recipient Daniel Wendler meets his donors
Daniel Wendler was a vibrant 6-year-old when we first met him in 2021. He is just as vibrant as an 11-year-old today, and that’s thanks to his blood donors. Daniel was born with a rare genetic blood disorder called beta thalassemia major, meaning his red blood cells struggle to carry oxygen through his body.
Patients living with beta thalassemia major need blood transfusions to replace those damaged red cells with healthy ones. Many patients need transfusions as often as once a month. That means patients like Daniel depend on blood donors to live their lives.
That also means Daniel receives blood from several donors every year. We gave Daniel and his family a chance to meet a few of these donors. It was a rare opportunity for everyone involved – most blood donors never meet the person their blood goes to – and it was an unforgettable night.
