On the night of July 7, 2016, Carter BloodCare medical technologists received a call from a local trauma center requesting blood products as soon as possible. The request was in addition to the standard order delivered earlier that day. The patients in urgent need of blood were some of the victims injured when a gunman shot into a crowd of peaceful protestors in downtown Dallas. We later learned that police were the targets.
Every request for blood is significant; however, this one hit dramatically close to home. Numerous police officers and two civilians were injured that night, and, heartbreakingly, five officers died. No one anticipated the tragedy that unfolded that night, but blood donors had already ensured that blood was ready and available for local hospitals when they called.
In emergencies, time is precious. The blood program doesn’t wait for blood donations. We rely on the blood already on the shelves to support hospitals and their patients. And because the community donated blood in the weeks leading up to that day – July 7, 2016 – our blood center was prepared to respond.
Dallas came together to show the world how strong they are. Everyone, from emergency responders and medical personnel, to citizens young and old, showed support for their city and the law enforcement community. In honor of Fallen Law Enforcement Officer Day and the lives lost on July 7, 2016, let’s work together as a community to continue to maintain a stable blood supply and stay strong.
Join us in supporting the community by signing up to host a blood drive at our second annual Fallen Heroes Blood Drive event in 2018. If you’re ready to get the process started, please call 877-385-8724 or email us today.
