Under the beating heat of the Texas sun, a crowd rallied around Carter BloodCare buses to give blood, save lives, and support their local firemen and police officers at Wylie’s annual Battle of The Badges Blood Drive.
The Battle of The Badges is a rival blood drive held each year in North Texas. Each summer, Wylie’s Battle of the Badges is hosted at the city’s historic downtown during the Bluegrass on Ballard festival. The drive encourages people from all over the community to come out and give over the weekend before July 4th.
In the spirit of friendly competition, firemen and police officers encourage their friends, family and supporters in the community to come out and donate, and cast their vote for firefighters or police.
“Everyone is a hero, and this is our way of honoring the heroes who protect us every day,” said Carter BloodCare recruiter Katie Huntsman.
Katie organizes and attends the Battle of The Badges in Wylie every year. Donors are always excited to step off the buses and cast their vote.
“Wylie’s community is very giving,” she said. “They never hesitate to support the police and fire department.”
At a Wylie city council meeting on August 8, Katie announced that in a 39-29 vote, the police department won the honor and plaque from this year’s Battle of the Badges. Overall, the teams collected 78 units of blood together and saved more than 230 lives!
Next year, the city plans to grow the event by adding a third bus to accommodate even more donors. Carter BloodCare collected 61 units of blood at the 2016 Battle of The Badges, and in 2018, the goal is 100 units. The event brings out everyone from regular donors to those giving blood for the first time. It’s an opportunity for high school students to donate during their summer break, and for families to teach their kids about the importance of giving blood to save lives. Since the Battle of The Badges attracts such a consistently large portion of the community, we encourage every city to host its own rival blood drive.
