How One Man’s Giving Spirit Has Changed Countless Lives
Since it’s the season of giving, we wanted to honor one of our donors who makes a big difference with his amazing generosity. Kevin Lewis has been a donor for a collective 25 years, and he doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon.
Kevin has always found it in his heart to give. His first donation was in the ‘80s at a blood drive on a bus because he felt like it was a good thing to do. Eventually, he faced different personal experiences that changed his outlook on how big of an impact his donations could make.
In 1995, one of Kevin’s close friends from his church developed a blood disease. Without hesitation, Kevin and other members of his church hosted blood drives every six months to help her get the donations she required. After that, he continued to make whole blood donations at Carter BloodCare every three months, until things changed again.
In 2005, Kevin’s father was diagnosed with prostate cancer. All of a sudden, his reasoning for giving became even more personal. And when he started doing research on how to help, Kevin learned that cancer patients like his father require platelet donations. That was all he needed to hear to start giving platelets. Kevin did so for about a year and a half until he heard more life-altering news…he was diagnosed with malignant melanoma and had a long road of recovery ahead of him.
After three years of fighting and countless treatments, Kevin was incredibly thankful to be declared cancer-free in September of 2009 — along with his father.
Since 2009, Kevin has returned to saving lives through donation. His spiritual beliefs drive his decision to give, along with his confidence in the medical community’s advancements. He explained “God said in the Bible that life is in the blood, that there is no replacement for it.”
When asked why he thinks people should donate, Kevin said there is only a small percentage of the population that is eligible to donate blood, and, out of those people, an even smaller number do so. While most people think Kevin is doing an amazing deed, he just sees it as the right thing to do.
We’re thankful for donors like Kevin who are willing to give everything they can and who help us save lives every day. His spirit is an inspiration to all of us at Carter BloodCare, and we hope it will inspire others in the community to give too.
