Every day you are faced to make decisions, some are routine and others are monumental. In college, did you take a leap of faith and band with the brothers on their quest to get matching Texas flag tattoos on their chests? Maybe you already went through your rebellious phase in high school and got a peace sign on your ankle after your parents swore they’d disown you (fortunately for you, they couldn’t leave you on the streets.) No matter when it happened, a decision was made and now you are wondering if you are eligible to donate blood.
Carter BloodCare wants to ensure you are educated on all the preliminary eligibilities and FAQ’s regarding blood donation. If you received a tattoo or body piercing at a Texas state-licensed facility then you are eligible to donate blood. Round of applause to you, you get to save three lives!
The Department of State Health Services requires any business that is in the practice of producing an indelible mark or figure on the human body by scarring or inserting pigments under the skin using needles, scalpels, or other related equipment to license with the Department of State Health Services. This includes studios that perform traditional tattooing, permanent cosmetics and scarification.
The Drugs and Medical Devices Group is responsible for conducting on-site inspections of tattoo and body piercing studios. During these inspections, they ensure that the studios comply with state and local laws and regulations. However, some cities in Texas have local ordinances that are more stringent or ban tattooing and body piercing altogether. After the inspections have been completed it is up to you and your judgment to determine if the environment is sanitary enough for you to continue your journey.
If you got a tattoo or body piercing at a questionable location that was not licensed with the state, then you are deferred for 12 months. We encourage everyone to look into his or her eligibility for donating blood. Donors of all blood types are important to us and the community values our donors.
