Since 1975, the KZPS Lone Star Summer Blood Drive has been making a profound impact on the North Texas summer blood supply. Although it started as a blood drive, the event has since evolved into a full-blown partnership with Clear Channel Communications, responsible for educating, recruiting and sustaining two generations of blood donors.
Clear Channel is the owner of Lone Star 92.5, plus 850 other U.S. radio stations. Part of its mission is to galvanize its resources to educate and inspire residents to make a difference within their own communities. Locally, Clear Channel has used Lone Star 92.5 and other local stations to push blood donation into new venues and new communities. It is the KZPS Summer Blood Drive – and so much more.
“Whenever we have a need, they reach out to us first,” says Jennifer Maul, director of marketing at Carter BloodCare. “When news of the West explosion began to spread, Clear Channel contacted Carter BloodCare to see how they could help. They get it – and that’s what makes our partnership so valuable.”
This summer, Clear Channel resources are also going toward the Music Saves Lives® campaign, a program using music to connect young people to community blood donation. Clear Channel’s 102.1 The Edge is committed to hosting drives, using on-air talent and tons of promotional support to get the word out to North Texas students looking for ways to make a difference.
The relationship with Clear Channel has also helped influence companies in communities that otherwise would not have connected to Carter BloodCare. They have been strategic in choosing blood drive venues – like Harley Davidson, the Allen Events Center and the Mesquite Rodeo. “These drives are a great introduction to what we do,” says Maul. “And the best part is that these businesses come back and continue hosting their own drives. These contacts are very valuable to our mission.”
And yes – it all started with the big Lone Star 92.5 Summer Blood Drive. “People come from all over to give blood at the Lone Star Drive,” says Maul. “In fact, many of our donors schedule their entire year of giving around this one drive. It’s become a real Texas tradition around here.”
Partnerships are a necessary part of involving community in our lifesaving mission of giving blood. As a Carter BloodCare partner, Clear Channel has gone above and beyond to model what it means for an organization to give back. Thank you Clear Channel radio stations for your partnership – and most of all – thank you for caring. There’s no counting the lives you’ve touched. You rock.
Music Saves Lives®
Music Saves Lives® is a national program created to educate communities about local lifesaving causes – like blood donation. The program uses all forms of music and entertainment to educate and empower youth about the power of giving blood. This summer, Carter BloodCare jumped on board to inspire our own. With the support of Clear Channel’s 102.1 The Edge and local VANS stores, not to mention some sweet concert passes, we were able to connect the music kids love to our lifesaving mission. Keep listening – and keep giving!
